The perfectly proportioned cylindrical body is finished in a deep black terra sigillata, whose velvety, satin-like surface possesses an almost mineral quality. Built up through successive layers of refined clay and enhanced by firing and smoke-firing, this subtle finish gently captures the light, revealing delicate tonal variations that lend the piece a quiet, contemplative presence.
The decoration unfolds around the body in the form of a sculpted ribbon in low relief, embracing the cylinder before converging on a central medallion depicting a Japanese Mon - more specifically the Kiri-mon, the traditional Paulownia crest. Used for centuries by noble families and the Imperial Court of Japan, this heraldic emblem symbolises prosperity, honour, wisdom and protection. Alexandra Courty reinterprets this ancient motif through a contemporary artistic language, replacing the original textile-inspired design with delicately carved relief and sculptural modelling.
The perfectly fitted lid is surmounted by an elegant patinated bronze finial, crowned with a warthog tusk whose naturally tapering form creates a harmonious dialogue with the geometry of the vessel. Cast using the traditional lost-wax process, the bronze introduces a strong sculptural and mineral presence that contrasts beautifully with the soft matte surface of the ceramic. The combination of clay, bronze and organic material has become one of Alexandra Courty's most distinctive artistic signatures.
