White porcelain decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, paying tribute to the celebrated blue-and-white wares produced at the Saint-Cloud Manufactory during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
A rare pair of small candlesticks with slightly waisted, truncated conical stems, resting on circular moulded bases decorated with gadrooning. The nozzles are ringed with gently everted rims, and each candlestick is fitted with a distinctive flattened thumb-rest handle.
The decoration, painted in rich cobalt blue, is directly inspired by the ornamental repertoire of Saint-Cloud porcelain, featuring lambrequins, stylised palmettes and floral motifs flowing elegantly around the body, complemented by a ribbon border beneath the rim. The brilliant glaze enhances the striking contrast between the deep cobalt blue decoration and the milky white porcelain body.
These candlesticks date from the period when Didier Gardillou developed a deep admiration for the productions of the Saint-Cloud Manufactory, reinterpreting their ornamental vocabulary with remarkable precision and vitality on a variety of creations, including knife handles, pot-pourri vases, and other decorative objects.
This fascinating "in the manner of Saint-Cloud" period now belongs to the artist's past. For several years, Didier Gardillou has no longer produced works inspired by this historic manufactory, making these pieces particularly desirable for collectors.
