"TALISMAN" SCULPTURE BY ISABELLE FUSTINONI

An extraordinary contemporary sculpture of elongated, gently curved organic form, reminiscent of a crescent, built around an internal wooden structure and entirely covered with a surface of natural rice grains, carefully assembled and fixed with resin. Deliberately irregular and richly textured, the surface creates a vibrant organic skin in which every grain contributes to a dense, almost mineral quality, evoking ritual, living matter, and the passage of time.

The composition is punctuated with applied beads in warm tones that rhythmically animate the surface while reinforcing its symbolic and fetish-like character. A central band of lacquered gilt brass encircles the sculpture, emphasising its graceful curvature and creating a visual tension between the two volumes. The extremities are further enriched with gilt-brass fittings and beads, providing a refined and precious finish.

Through its sinuous, asymmetrical silhouette, the work oscillates between ritual object, talisman, and organic sculpture, placing the transformation of matter at the heart of its artistic language.

With this work, Isabelle Fustinoni invites us into her singular creative universe. Through gesture, repetition, and the metamorphosis of humble materials, she develops a poetic visual language that is both emotionally resonant and intellectually evocative.

This contemporary sculpture enters into a natural dialogue with historic works of art through its relationship to material, gesture, and ritual. Constructed from humble materials—natural rice grains bonded with resin—and enhanced with precious elements, it evokes a fetish or relic from an imagined civilisation, existing at the intersection of ethnography and contemporary artistic creation.

Rather than illustrating a specific narrative, the work invites contemplation and interpretation. Its quiet, organic presence recalls ritual objects, historical curiosities, and artefacts imbued with an almost sacred aura. It possesses a timeless quality, suspended beyond any precise historical period, born from the contrast between the simplicity of its materials and the refinement of its ornamentation.

Displayed within a collection where historic and contemporary works converse, the sculpture creates a bridge across centuries. It reinterprets the questions embodied by ancient objects—their function, symbolism, and sacred dimension—through a distinctly contemporary sculptural language, transforming memory into a living and enduring work of art.
