RARE SÈVRES PLATE

ROYAL MANUFACTORY

Circular in form, with a shaped rim and resting on a shallow foot ring, this plate has a gently recessed or flat surface, depending on its intended use. Its central area, known as the well, is surrounded by a curved cavetto, creating a harmonious transition towards the broad, flat border of the plate.

In French silverware terminology, this area is known as the marli, while porcelain manufactories use the term aile to designate the border, which was often embellished with painted, moulded or gilt decoration according to the style and period.

SOFT-PASTE PORCELAIN

Decorated on a white ground with a polychrome scene depicting two birds in a landscape, perched upon a grassy mound enlivened with flowers and foliage beside a small tree with sinuous branches.

The border features a rich lapis-blue ground finely speckled with gold and is decorated with three shaped white reserves framed by gilt scrollwork, foliage and rocaille motifs. Each reserve contains a naturalistically painted bouquet of polychrome flowers. A gold line runs around the rim.
