RARE ENGRAVING, “

THE PORT OF ROSCOFF, VIEWED FROM PORSGLASE”

Original etching on laid paper.

Hand-coloured in watercolour.

The engraving presents a panoramic view of the Port of Roscoff. Numerous sailing ships, small boats and merchant vessels fill the harbour, some lying at anchor, while an imposing ship with partially unfurled sails dominates the left-hand side of the composition.

In the distance, the houses of Roscoff extend along the shoreline, overlooked by the town’s church tower. To the right, a stone pier marks the entrance to the harbour and draws the eye towards the open sea.

The foreground is animated by figures, horse riders, peasants, shepherds and animals, evoking everyday life and the exchanges between the rural world and the maritime activity of the period.

After Nicolas-Marie Ozanne (1728–1811), a French draughtsman and naval engineer born in Brest and deceased in Paris. A member of the French Naval Academy, he devoted much of his career to depicting ships, naval manoeuvres and French harbours. His highly precise and remarkably lively drawings now constitute an invaluable record of the 18th-century French navy.

Engraved by Yves-Marie Le Gouaz (1742–1816), a French engraver born in Brest and deceased in Paris. A pupil of Nicolas-Marie Ozanne and later of Jacques Aliamet, he was appointed engraver to the French Academy of Sciences in 1770. He interpreted numerous maritime compositions and notably engraved an important series of views of French harbours after drawings by Ozanne.
